I was up and out of the apartment Saturday morning by 7:00 a.m. Checking the forecast, the worst of the storm would be on top of the pass about the time I got there. Perfect.
Rain didn’t start until kilometer 26, but stopped by kilometer 29, and left me alone after that until kilometer 60. I thereafter had continual showers all day. My rain gear held up fine, but my feet were wet. High for the day was 50° – I was glad for my wool socks! At one point today I was startled by a moose!
I arrived in Leizen (about kilometer 95) about 3:00 p.m. I stopped for groceries, because tomorrow is Sunday. I stopped at McDonald’s, for calories, Wi-Fi, and just being warm. I decided to go ahead and push on to Irding, 20 km away. Ended up settled in a guest house there.
Today I again encountered the problem of the gpx track and OSMAnd routing not quite matching the distance. I’d expected the pass to be at about 30 km, instead of the 50 km it took to get there.
Despite the rain, I’m happy with the day. While EV14 wandered all to hell and gone, I stayed mostly on dedicated path or paved tractor roads, mostly next to the river or the railroad track. Most of the steep places were again bridge crossings, otherwise it was mostly a long steady easy climb until the pass. Then a long steady decline the rest of the day. Mountains wreathed in clouds surrounded me all day.
It’s hard to express well the majesty of the mountains around me. To me, the photos just don’t do it justice.
I’ve looked at the forecast for tomorrow but really the reliability there is so low is to make it almost worthless. In all likelihood I’ll reach the end of EV 14, switching over to EV7 and the descent down into Salzburg. There’s another pass to cross however.
